
pH questions can look intimidating because they involve logarithms, and most students do not want to do log math in their heads on test day. The good news is that the MCAT usually gives you versions of these questions that can be handled with a simple shortcut.
If the hydrogen ion concentration is written as 1 x 10^-x, you can usually get the pH almost immediately. The key is knowing what the pH equation is really doing to the exponent.
Whenever a passage or question stem gives you hydrogen ion concentration, pause and write it down. On the MCAT, that is a strong clue that pH may be coming.
In the transcript example, the passage gives:

The 1 in front does not change the value. For this quick method, that clean mantissa is exactly what makes the math easy.
The equation for pH is:
That means pH is the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration.
The reason pH exists is practical: scientists did not want to constantly work with tiny hydrogen ion concentrations like 0.00001 M. The logarithm turns a small exponential number into a more manageable value.
For MCAT acid-base math, assume log base 10 unless the question clearly tells you otherwise. In base 10 logs, the log function essentially pulls down the exponent when the number is a power of 10.
For example:
You can think of the logarithm as canceling the 10-to-the structure and leaving the exponent behind.
Now use the pH equation with the example concentration:
The log brings down the exponent:
Then the negative sign in the pH equation changes the sign:
So the pH is 5.
When [H+] is written as 1 x 10^-x, the pH is x.
This works because the pH equation has a negative sign built in, and hydrogen ion concentrations are usually written with negative exponents.
The MCAT may write hydrogen ion concentration as [H+] or as [H3O+]. For these pH calculations, they mean the same thing.
So if a question gives:

A helpful pattern: in acid-base chemistry, a lowercase p usually signals a negative log.
You do not need to overcomplicate that pattern. Just recognize that the p notation is telling you to use a logarithmic transformation.
If [H+] = 10^-5, log(10^-5) is -5. But pH is negative log, so the pH is positive 5.
Make sure the question gives hydrogen ion concentration or hydronium concentration. Do not use a random concentration from the passage just because it is written in scientific notation.
If the concentration is a clean power of 10, you do not need a calculator or a complicated log strategy. You just need the exponent.
This shortcut is cleanest when the mantissa is 1. If the concentration is something like 5 x 10^-9, you need a range method instead of simply taking the exponent as the answer.
For basic pH logarithm questions, look for the hydrogen ion concentration first. If it is written as 1 x 10^-x, the pH is x.
Once you see the pattern, these questions become quick. The logarithm is just turning the exponent into a manageable pH value.
